Visual Control of the RH Process

Decarburization Process
Visual Monitoring of the Process at the RH Vacuum Degasser
What does the initials RH mean?
-
R is the short out for Ruhrstahl
The first RH degasser was developed and installed at the steelmaking company Ruhrstahl AG, Germany.
-
H is the short cut for Heraeus.
Heraeus was a main supplier of vacuum pumps and constructed the vacuum pump for the first RH Degasser.
RH is a recirculation degassing process (continuous circulation of steel from the ladle via the inlet snorkel tower RH vessel and outlet snorkel back to the ladle).
A high turbulent steel flow from the inlet to the outlet snorkel takes place.
Re-circulation rates are dependente on:
• Snorkel diameter
• Lift gas flow rate and
• Vacuum pressure in the RH vessel.
To better understand this wonderful process, we have prepared a video that shows us what happens inside the RH vessel during the circulation process of Ultra Low Carbon steel at the beginning of its maximum decarburization, where the level of the bath reaches close to the chute of alloy additions.
To be possible this visual control of the process, the best image guaranteed in the internal camera positioned at the top of the RH vessel is necessary.
